In 1988, then President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5847, thereby declaring August 21st National Senior Citizens Day. It certainly is nice to have a day specifically set aside in their honor! At Advanced Home Care Services, we believe it’s important to recognize the contributions and accomplishments of our senior population. We also know it’s a privilege to be part of ensuring their independence, safety, and well-being. And we do just that by providing top-notch Massachusetts in-home senior care.
For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older — places in which older people can participate to the fullest and can find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance, and services they need to continue to lead lives of independence and dignity.
Ways to Celebrate National Senior Citizens Day
- Lake or Beach Outing – Take a walk together or push your favorite senior’s wheelchair on the boardwalk at a local lake or beach. Cool your feet and take in the relaxing sounds of the moving water. Be sure to pack sunscreen and plenty of water. Staying hydrated will help keep your senior safe at home this summer and during outings.
- Plan a Picnic – Pack a picnic and head to a nearby park. Find a picnic table in a shady area and enjoy dining al fresco.
- Prepare a Summer Meal – Visit a local farm stand then prepare a meal inspired by the fresh ingredients. Preparing and eating a healthy meal together is not only an investment in your relationship but also your health. If ongoing meal prep is needed, turn to our companionship services.
- Look Through Old Photos – Take the time to reminisce by looking at old photos and swapping stories and memories. Keeping your loved ones included is important, especially if they are prone to the social isolation that accompanies Alzheimer’s Disease sufferers.
